When is the Best Time to Take a Food Tour in Savannah, Georgia?
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned Savannah local, there is one question we get more than any other: “When is the best time to take a food tour?”
Since our tours aren’t just a snack—they’re a full, multi-stop meal—the timing of your stroll through the Hostess City can completely change your experience. From the early bird advantage to the mid-afternoon “happy hour” vibe, here is a breakdown of the best times to join us at Savannah Taste Experience®.
Finding Your Flavor: The Pros & Cons of Every Time Slot
11:00 AM – The Early Bird Special
Pros: You get the “first bite” of the day! Restaurants are fresh, quiet, and the staff is energized. This is one of the most popular tour timeslots, so you will likely have a full tour (up to 14 people) and therefore lots of new friends by the end of your 3-hour adventure. Booking the earliest time slot is a great way to beat the heat during Savannah’s humid summer months.
Cons: It requires a light (or skipped) breakfast. If you’re a late sleeper on vacation, this might feel a bit like a “brunch” tour.
11:30 AM – The “Sweet Spot”
Pros: 11am just a little too early for you and your crew? No problem! The 11:30a time slot gives you more breathing room and time to park if you need to. Your food tour will finish around 2:30p, leaving a large chunk of the afternoon and your entire evening free for a nap or more exploring. You’ll also likely still have an appetite again by dinnertime. Win-win!
Cons: Because it’s a popular time, these tours tend to book up the fastest. You’ll need to plan ahead! We recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance for all our tours.
Noon – The Traditional Lunch Hour
Pros: It aligns perfectly with your body’s natural hunger cues. You’re essentially trading a standard sit-down lunch for a moving feast through five different locations. We have tours that start at 12p and 12:45p, depending on when your usual lunchtime falls.
Cons: The Historic District is at its busiest. You might be navigating more sidewalk traffic between stops, though we always try to have your tables waiting!
1:00 PM – The Late Lunch Escape
Pros: The initial lunch rush in the city starts to die down, leading to a more relaxed pace. We have tours at 1p and 1:15p, which are both great options for those who like to sleep in or spend their morning at one of Savannah’s museums. This time slot also allows for a hearty breakfast at a classic Savannah eatery like Clary’s.
Cons: You’ll likely be full until late in the evening, which might interfere with early dinner reservations.
4:00 PM – The Afternoon “Happy Hour”
Pros: The lighting in the squares is stunning at this hour (hello, golden hour photos!). Our Walktails and Bar Bites Happy Hour Tour is a sophisticated transition from day to evening, often feeling more like a series of appetizers and cocktails enjoyed with friends. This time slot sets the stage for a fun and responsibly paced night on the town.
Cons: It can be a “spoiler” for dinner. You will likely find yourself too full to eat a standard meal at 7:00 PM. Plan on sharing a few more apps if you need a bit more sustenance after the tour.
Why We Skip the “Dinner” Tour
You might notice we don’t offer late-evening food tours. While Savannah is beautiful at night, it isn’t the best time for a curated tasting experience. Here’s why:
- The Dinner Rush: Savannah’s best restaurants are packed in the evenings. Bringing a group through a busy dining room during peak service isn’t a great experience for you or the restaurant staff.
- The Nightlife Shift: As the sun goes down, the city’s energy shifts. The peaceful squares can get a bit more “spirited” (and loud), making it harder to hear your guide’s fascinating stories about Savannah’s history.
- Daylight is King: You can’t truly appreciate the intricate ironwork and the draping Spanish Moss of the First Squares in the dark! Daytime tours offer the best visibility for the city’s world-famous squares and historic architecture.
Bonus: Which Day Should You Choose?
Savannah has a slightly different “mood” every day of the week. Depending on your personality, one might be better than the other:
| Day | Pros | Cons |
| Mon – Wed | Quiet & Intimate. You’ll feel like you have the city to yourself. Great for one-on-one time with your guide. | Some smaller boutiques or “mom-and-pop” shops may be closed on Mondays. |
| Thursday | The Best of Both Worlds. The “pre-weekend” buzz is starting, but the crowds haven’t arrived yet. | Very few! This is a guide favorite. |
| Fri – Sat | High Energy. The city is vibrant and alive! Perfect if you love people-watching and a festive atmosphere. | The squares are crowded, and traffic can make the walking segments a bit slower. |
| Sunday | The “Slow Down” Day. Savannah’s “Sunday Funday” vibe is unmatched. Great for a relaxed, easy-going pace. | Some locations may have limited Sunday hours or different menus. |
